Barry Otieno: FKF is working on a KCSE ,World Cup formula with Education Ministry

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) leadership has revealed that it is working on a plan with the Ministry of Education.

This plan will allow the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates, who will participate in the upcoming 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, to take their exams after the life-changing tournament.

The dates for the KCSE will coincide with the U17 Women’s World Cup, which means the players and their parents/guardians are in a dilemma about whether to play in the World Cup or take the exams.

The tournament is set to take place in the Dominican Republic from 16th October 2024 to 3rd November 2024, while the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) starts on 23rd October 2024 and concludes on 24th November 2024.

Football Kenya Federation CEO Barry Otieno revealed to the Star newspaper that talks between Senior officials at the Ministry of Education and the Federation in regard to the plans on how the candidate will sit their exams after the World Cup are at an advanced stage.

“We are engaging Senior Ministry of Education officials and Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) on the same. We are eyeing remedial classes, and the possibility of sitting special exams after the World Cup.” Said Barry told the Star.

The Emerging Starlets have two friendly matches lined up before they head into camp for the U17 Women’s World Cup.

According to Barry, the team will pitch camp in Spain, where they will also play the friendly matches. He added that the team will depart for the Dominican Republic on the 1st of October.

Barry stated that they intend to take the team there early so that they can get familiar with the climate and time difference before the global showcase.

“The Dominican Republic is six hours ahead of Kenya, and arriving there early will ensure they adapt to the different time zones and acclimatize to the environment before kickoff,” he said.

On her part, the team’s coach, Mildred Cheche, asked the government to facilitate remedial classes for the girls by hiring tutors to help them prepare for KCSE, just as it did during the qualifiers.

The Kenya National Women’s U17 football team made Kenya proud by becoming the first national football team to ever qualify for the World Cup.

The Junior Starlets achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first Kenyan national team to qualify for a World Cup. This remarkable feat follows their 5-0 aggregate victory over Burundi in the fourth and final round of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

The decisive match took place on Sunday, June 16, 2024, at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.
