All about Bata shoe company as it marks 129 years

Bata shoe company has been in existence for 129 years. The company was founded by Tomas Bata in the year 1894 in Zlin, Czechoslovakia.


“Tomas Bata revolutionized the local shoe industry by using canvas instead of leather to make quality shoes more accessible and improved working conditions through innovative production,” read a statement by Bata.

They celebrated Founder’s Day on Friday 22nd September last week. Bata commemorated this day by gifting shoes to school-going children.

Bata’s relationship with employees

“During World War 1, we became a major military supplier and expanded rapidly. In the post-war economic crisis, Tomas Bata cared for his Zlin workers by providing food and clothing.”

They have maintained this culture over the years. “Founder’s Day is also a time of the year when we make a point to recognise and appreciate our employees’ unwavering dedication and commitment.”

It continues to produce quality and affordable shoes.

“So on this meaningful occasion, we gather to remember the journey and the hard work of so many that has led us where we are today,” read the statement in part.

“And on this day, we remember that through it all, we have remained united by our common desire to make a difference and contribute to a brighter future.”

Corporate social responsibility (CSR)

They launched an initiative called Bata Children’s Program in 2011.

The program intends to empower children reach their full potential.

“Since its inception, the program has helped over 400,000 children in the communities where Bata operates.”

Activities covered under the program include: supporting infrastructure upgrades in schools, promoting health and well-being through sports.

Empowering girls through specialised programs and contributing to environmental sustainability through tree plantation drives.
