Kenya’s 23 year Beatrice Chebet broke the women’s world 5km record in Barcelona in a time of 14min 13sec an improvement of 14:29 previously set by Ethiopia’s Senbere Teferi in September 2021.
“I came to Barcelona determined to better the world record as I felt capable of that,” said Chebet. “This world record means a lot for me, I can’t believe it.”
This comes weeks days after she won a gold medal at the inaugural World Athletics Road Running Championships in Riga in October.
Ethiopia’s Taye, was second in the race and Kenya’s Lilian Rengeruk, 26, third.
The win completed a successful year for Chebet, who won the world cross-country title Bathurst in February before claiming the inaugural world 5km title in Riga in October.
She also won bronze in the 5,000m at the World Championships in Budapest in August.
Britain’s Katie Snowden and Holly Dixon finished seventh and 10th respectively.
The men’s race was won by 25-year-old Dominic Lobalu of South Sudan.
