Belgium’s Amadou Onana snapped back at a reporter following his nation’s Euro 2024 curtain raiser against Slovakia. The Everton ace, seemingly in low spirits after the 1-0 loss, surprised fans online with his sudden switch to English.
After playing a full 90 minutes for Belgium, Onana was heading to fulfill some post-match duties. A reporter stopped him and mistakenly called him “Andre,” confusing him with Andre Onana, the Cameroonian player with no connection to the Euros.
Initially conducting a side interview in French, Amadou Onana was rudely interrupted, prompting him to reply, saying:
“Andre is not even my name mate, do you know what I mean?”
Despite sharing the same surname, Amadou and Andre have distinct backgrounds and career paths. Andre, born in Cameroon, plays for Manchester United and the Cameroon national team.
In contrast, Amadou was born in Senegal to a Cameroonian father and a Senegalese mother before moving to Brussels at the age of 11.
He made his debut for the Belgium senior team in 2022 and has been an important part of their squad since.
