Benedicta Kosgei participated and finished third in last year’s Great Chepsaita Cross Country Marathon in Uasin Gishu County. She was awarded a cow.
The TV47 crew visited her in her home in Turbo Constituency, Uasin Gishu County, and they found her feeding her treasured asset.
The elderly Kosgei secured a podium finish in the seniors category during the inaugural edition of the marathon last year in December, and this cash cow makes her look forward to the next day.
Benedicta Kosgei won a tender to supply milk in the nearby ACK Chepsaita Primary School since the cow can produce more than 20 liters of milk per day.
“I get happier when the cow gives birth; the cow has helped me; I sell the milk to school, and from there I can get to buy soap, sugar, and other everyday needs.”
Her business with the school offloaded the burden of paying school fees off her shoulders.
She says the proceeds from last year’s marathon have helped reduce the cost of schooling her kids, and it also helps her take care of her needs.
She continues to train every day between 3.00 pm and 4.00 pm as she expects stiff competition in this year’s race.
Kosgei urges Kenyans to come out in large numbers to participate and stand a chance to win life-changing prizes as well as secure scholarships for needy students.”I want Kenyans to come out we run together so that our kids can go to school while our expenses are reduced.”
The senior race has attracted attention to the race ahead of this year’s event on the 7th of December.
“As a result of the performances that we had last year, we have come up with a number of initiatives that will help the athletes who are in school so that we grow education alongside sports. Construction of playgrounds will also be part of the Great Run.” Athletics Kenya (AK) Youth Development Director Barnaba Korir said.
Over 10,000 runners, both local and international, are expected to make their way to the home of champions to race in the different categories available.
