Best performing Kenya Prisons Service athletes feted

Best performing Kenya Prisons Service athletes were feted on Tuesday April 15, 2025 at night in a ceremony held at a Nairobi hotel.

The ceremony that was presided over by Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco, was meant to motivate the officers besides recognizing and honoring them for their contributions to the country’s athletic achievements.

While lauding the athletes for their achievement, PS Beacco called for a commitment to nurture, encourage, and invest in the untapped potential within the Kenya Prisons Service ranks.

“Tonight, we are honouring the spirit of perseverance, discipline, and patriotism that defines true champions. Our athletes have once again demonstrated to the world that Kenyan Correctional officers can produce world-class excellence and finesse in the sporting arena,” she noted.

According to Commissioner General of Prisons Patrick Aranduh, the service remains committed to nurturing talent while at the same time rewarding best performers. 

During the event, Corporal Peter Mwangi who won a gold medal in shot put at the World Masters’ championships in Florida USA, with a throw of 14.79 meters was promoted to the rank of a sergeant.

Others who were feted during the ceremony included Regina Mulatya who registered a double triumph, earning silver medals in both the Triple Jump and Long Jump at the World Masters’ championships as well as Sergeant Ibrahim Muya who won silver in the 60 meters race clocking in at 8.2 seconds and senior superintendent Elizabeth Muthoka who finished fourth in the 400 meters women finals.

Others were Sergent Rayton Okwiri who won at an international boxing competition in Mauritius retaining the honour of the reigning African Boxing Union Middleweight Champion.

Members of the Kenya Prisons Service women team who scooped the third position in the 10 kilometers senior women category at the national cross-country championships were also feted.

The team comprised of Brian Chepkorir who won the 10 K race becoming the National Cross-Country champion 2025, Abigael Chelagat who finished at position 6, Rebecca Mwangi who was placed at position 21, Loise Chemning who is also the current Lisbon half marathon champion and Millicent Nyambane.  

Lillian Odira and Miriam Cherop, who participated in the two-kilometer senior women’s race at the national cross-country championships, were also recognized during the event.
