Beyoncé wins legal battle over daughter’s Blue Ivy name

Beyoncé has successfully won a 12-year-long legal battle to trademark her daughter’s name Blue Ivy. This ruling, issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on December 31, 2024, gives the superstar exclusive rights to the iconic name—a pursuit she initiated right after Blue Ivy’s birth in 2012.

The legal saga began when Veronica Morales, a wedding planner who had been operating under the name “Blue Ivy Events” since 2009, opposed Beyoncé’s application.

Morales argued that her business had been using the name long before the superstar’s trademark request through BGK Trademark Holdings LLC.

The dispute garnered significant attention over the years, but in 2020, the USPTO dismissed Morales’ claims, determining that her business and Beyoncé’s planned use of the name were not similar enough to cause confusion.

However, despite the favorable decision, Beyoncé’s trademark application was abandoned in 2020.

Undeterred, Beyoncé resumed her efforts in November 2023, only to face opposition from a Wisconsin boutique that also claimed the Blue Ivy name.

But the USPTO examiner recently ruled that the boutique’s claim lacked sufficient grounds to block the trademark.

According to legal documents, any opposition to the trademark must be filed within 30 days of publication.

If no objections arise by January 30, 2025, Beyoncé will be granted a Notice of Allowance, officially securing her rights to the name.

This monumental win marks the culmination of Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s efforts to protect their daughter’s name from potential commercial exploitation.

In a 2013 Vanity Fair interview, Jay-Z explained the reasoning behind filing the trademark: “People wanted to make products based on our child’s name, and you don’t want anybody trying to benefit off your baby’s name,” he said. “It wasn’t for us to do anything; as you see, we haven’t done anything.”

This victory is not only a significant legal milestone but also a major move in the ongoing effort to preserve Blue Ivy’s name as a cherished part of the Carter family’s legacy.
