Birmingham City appointed Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney as their head coach on October 11, taking over from John Eustace, who was fired after 15 months at the helm.
Rooney had just parted ways with Major League Soccer (MLS) side DC United and signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Championship club, with his former teammates Ashley Cole and John O’Shea joining in as his assistants.
“Wayne is a born winner. We believe he will take Blues forward to the next stage of our journey. His playing philosophy will help to realize the ambitions we have set for Birmingham City,” club co-owner and chairman Tom Wagner said upon Rooney’s appointment.
Eustace, who the previous season stirred the Blues off relegation despite a myriad of off-field issues, had guided the club to a bright start. The 43-year-old left Birmingham in fifth place with 18 points from the opening 11 matches.
Since taking over slightly over two months ago, Rooney has guided Birmingham in 14 Championship games – Middlesbrough, Hull City, Southampton, Ipswich Town, Sunderland, Leicester City, Cardiff City, and Stoke City, among others.
The England legend has only managed two wins in 14 games (2-1 over Sheffield Wednesday and 1-0 over Cardiff City). He has managed four draws against Ipswich Town, Rotherham, Plymouth Argyle, and Bristol City. This has seen him manage just a paltry ten points from a possible 42.
