National Unity Platform leader Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine was on Thursday, October 5, arrested immediately after landing at the Entebbe International Airport.

Police arrested Bobi Wine who had returned to Uganda from his international mobilization tours in Canada and South Africa.

The arrest follows an earlier warning by the police who had insisted that NUP supporters should not assemble along the roads or the airport to welcome him.

According to the police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Luke Owoyesigyire,  the security officers had not received any notice about the Bobi Wine welcome event.

Owoyesigyire had earlier warned NUP supporters against assembling to welcome their party, adding that those found would be dealt with by the full force of the law.

“I am not aware of this welcome back fete, and any unlawful procession will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” Owoyesigyire stated.

On the other hand, NUP leaders and supporters vowed to assemble at the Entebbe Airport to welcome their party leader.

Upon landing at the airport, he was expected to lead a procession dubbed ‘one million march’ to Kampala city.

At the same time, his supporters had defied the police order and assembled along highways to the Entebbe airport to welcome him.

“Ugandans have decided to welcome our NUP president right from the airport to his residence,” said Makindye Ssabagabo MP Davidsaid Sserukenya.

He added that the welcome fete was a very peaceful event and not a political event for the NUP party leader.
