Tragedy struck Chebisian village in Bomet County when a 30-year-old mother killed her two children, aged 12 and 3, before taking her own life.
On Saturday August 3, 2024, police discovered the bodies of the children inside their home, which had been locked from the inside.
The woman had used a panga to commit the murders and then hanged herself. Authorities had to force their way into the house, where they found bodies of the children in a pool of blood.
The bodies have been taken to Longisa County Hospital for a postmortem.
Police suspect the woman’s mental health struggles may have contributed to the horrific act but are also investigating the possibility that the scene might have been staged.
Suicide rates are rising, with reports indicating up to two cases daily.
According to health experts, suicides are mainly caused by unemployment, academic and financial pressures, legal troubles, and personal issues like bullying, substance abuse, and mental health disorders.
Previously in June, a similar tragic incident occurred in Kirinyaga, where two young children were reportedly thrown into a water well by their mother in Kiandai village.
Neighbors heard their cries for help and tried to rescue them, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
The local community, enraged by the tragedy, attacked the mother before police arrived and intervened.
The woman was then taken to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital with severe injuries from the beating. At that time, Police stated that the woman will be charged with murder.
What made the woman kill her two children
According to Moses Koskei, Kirinyaga West Sub-County Police Commander’s report, the tragic deaths followed a domestic dispute between Wambui and her husband.
Thomas Kabuci, a local resident and landowner near the swamp where the incident occurred, discovered Wambui and her children by the water.
When asked about the situation, Wambui explained that she planned to end her own life and that of her sons after being expelled from their home by her husband.
