Boy, 17, fighting for his life after vicious mob attack; he’s accused of chopping off neighbours hand

Police in Siaya County are investigating an incident that saw a 17-year-old hospitalised after being rescued from an angry mob that was baying for his blood in Mahaya village.

The boy was rescued by the police after members of the public cornered him and gave him a beating. This was after he had reportedly attacked and chopped off the hand of his neighbour identified as Mariko Monye on Saturday, July 20 night.

Confirming the incident, Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo says that the matter was reported at Aram Police Station by the area Assistant Chief Moses Ombewa.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that unknown assailants attacked Mariko that night and chopped off his hand. Incensed residents then pursued the attackers and managed to apprehend one suspect, before subjecting him to mob attack.

Aram Police Station officers rushed to the scene to rescue the suspect, before rushing him to Lwak Mission Hospital. He would later be referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital in critical condition.

The victim whose hand was chopped off is receiving treatment at Bondo Sub-County Hospital.
