A Brazilian woman who made headlines last year for marrying herself has recently decided to call it quits.
Suellen Carey , who gained widespread attention in 2023 for her unique act of “sologamy,” has now filed for divorce, citing boredom and a desire to move on from the relationship with herself.
Carey’s initial decision to marry herself was rooted in self-love and independence.
She wanted to challenge the societal pressure of being in a relationship and prove that happiness does not necessarily come from a romantic partner.
The ceremony, which was held in London, included all the trappings of a traditional wedding – a white gown, a cake, and vows – but with a twist: the bride was the sole participant.
At the time, Carey shared her joy on social media, stating, “I wanted to show people that we don’t need someone to complete us.”
However, a year later, her enthusiasm for the marriage has waned. Carey revealed that she has tried attending couple therapy in order to navigate her marriage but nothing has worked and says she’s now back into the dating pool.
“I learnt that while self discovery is important, knowing when to close a chapter is crucial too. It was a valuable experience but I feel ready to move forward,” she explained.
“The hardest part was the pressure to be perfect for myself all the time. I realized I demand too much from myself, which can be draining.
I learnt that even in a marriage with ourselves, we need to embrace our flaws,” she revealed.
Carey’s decision to “divorce” herself has sparked renewed public interest and debate over the concept of sologamy.
Some see her story as a humorous commentary on modern relationships, while others view it as a profound statement about the importance of self-awareness and personal growth.
Her journey highlights the balance between embracing independence and acknowledging the human desire for connection.
