Breaking the cycle of violence: World AIDS Day Half Marathon 2024

This year’s World Aids Day Half Marathon is not just about addressing the global fight against HIV/AIDS but also an important moment to shine a light on the intersection between HIV and sexual gender- based violence (SGBV).

This connection is significant because gender based violence disproportionately impacts our women and the marginalized communities, making them more vulnerable to HIV infection and less likely to receive essential care and support.

SGBV includes physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and often hinders individuals from accessing HIV prevention, treatment, and care services.

The women and girls who go through or experience violence also face a higher risk of contracting HIV, Particularly in communities where stigma, discrimination, and lack of healthcare access prevents open discussions about sexual health and safety.

The fear and embarrassment of violence can also discourage one from seeking necessary HIV testing or adhering to treatment plans from the doctor, perpetuating cycles of vulnerability and illness.

The World AIDS Day Half Marathon scheduled to take place on December 1, 2024, is dedicated to these same individuals by providing safe, accessible healthcare services, empowering survivors of violence with the resources they need, and of course creating educational programs that inform communities about the link between HIV and GBV.

“The commemoration is rallying call focused on one aim: ending AIDS and confronting its associated risks, new infections, unintended pregnancies, and gender- based violence, a mission we refer to as ending the triple threat,” said Health CS Dr. Deborah Barasa.

Ending gender inequality and sexual violence against children and adolescents can help create a safer, AIDS free future.

“Adolescents, especially girls, face a triple threat of HIV infection, early pregnancies, and exposure to sexual and gender- based violence,” she said.

The World AIDS Half Marathon, is serving as a platform for raising awareness on both issues. It is bringing together participants, health professionals, donors, and activists to safety, health, and dignity for all regardless of their gender.

Everyone has the chance to live healthy.
