On Friday, September 15, 2023, Brighton head coach Roberto De Zerbi sent a stern message to Manchester United ahead of their high-voltage English Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Speaking at a press conference, De Zerbi lauded Old Trafford’s legacy but emphasized his team’s commitment to securing maximum points with their distinctive style of play.

“Old Trafford? It’s an honour to coach at this stadium but make no mistake, we’re not here as tourists. We aim to play our way and emerge victorious,” stated the Italian, who holds Manchester United in high regard and acknowledges the challenge that this league fixture presents.

While acknowledging the fortress-like reputation of Old Trafford, the 44-year-old manager expressed his team’s intent to take control of the game and emerge victorious.

“Manchester United remains a powerhouse in European football. The atmosphere will be electric, but our DNA compels us to play well, maintain possession, and strive for victory. It’s a tough match, but we possess the qualities needed to triumph,” Roberto De Zerbi added.

True to his words, the Seagulls did not go to Old Trafford as tourists. They ripped apart Manchester United, beating them 3-1 with United academy graduate Danny Welbeck continuing to haunt his former side.

Brighton beat Manchester United at Old Trafford

Manchester United witnessed their impressive 31-game unbeaten streak at home come to an abrupt halt this Saturday as they suffered a resounding 3-1 defeat at the hands of Brighton, compounding the array of challenges currently plaguing Old Trafford.

Danny Welbeck, known for his knack for haunting the Red Devils, struck once again, breaking the deadlock just 20 minutes into the game.

This came despite United’s initial dominance, attributed in part to their new formation under the guidance of manager Erik ten Hag.

Pascal Gross, another player who has frequently troubled United in the past, doubled Brighton’s lead in the second half.

The Seagulls further solidified their victory with a magnificent third goal, courtesy of substitute Joao Pedro, before Hannibal Mejbri scored a remarkable late consolation goal for United.

The Red Devils had been determined to bounce back from their previous bruising 3-1 defeat to Arsenal two weeks ago.

However, numerous off-field issues had cast a shadow over Old Trafford.
