Chicago-born actor Andre Braugher known for his role as Police Captain Raymond Holt on the popular American Sitcom Brooklyn 99 has passed at the age of 61 following a short illness.
He appeared on 153 episodes of the show from 2013-2022, In his career, Braugher was nominated for a total of 11 Emmys, including other projects such as Men of a Certain Age, Gideon’s Crossing and The Tuskegee Airmen.
The news of the actor’s death was confirmed by his publicist Jennifer Allen, who revealed that the actor succumbed to a brief illness on Monday.
The actor is survived by his wife of more than 30 years, Ami Brabson; their three sons Michael, Isaiah and John; his brother Charles Jennings and his mother Sally Braugher.
Braugher was also known for his roles as Detective Frank Pembleton in the police drama series Homicide: Life on the Street (1993–1999), used car salesman Owen Thoreau Jr. in the comedy-drama series Men of a Certain Age (2009–2011), and Captain Raymond Holt in the police comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013–2021).
For his television work, Braugher received two Primetime Emmy Awards from eleven nominations, as well as two Golden Globe Award nominations. He had supporting roles in films such as Glory (1989), Primal Fear (1996), City of Angels (1998), Frequency (2000), Duets (2000), Poseidon (2006), The Mist (2007), Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), Salt (2010), The Gambler (2014), and She Said (2022). Braugher also appeared in numerous series such as Thief, The Good Fight, BoJack Horseman, House, and New Girl.
