Police in Mwibale, Bungoma County, are investigating an incident where a university student was found dead after suspected suicide.

The body of Benson Wafula was found at his parents house in the village on Saturday, July 26. It was hanging from the roof truss, with a rope tied around his neck.

Police who visited the scene removed the body to Bungoma County Referral Hospital morgue for postmortem.

At the time of his death, Wafula was a third-year student at Lakeside University.

There has been a rise of suicide cases in Kenya, with the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) linking a majority of these cases to mental ill-health.

Data from World Bank put the suicide mortality rates in Kenya at 6.1 percent in every 100,000 people in 2019. The same data shows that men are the top-most victims at 9.1/100,000 people.
