Burnley and Leeds United have grabbed their spots back in the Premier League with thrilling wins, while Sheffield United must face the Championship play-offs after a late slip.
Burnley earned their spot with a strong 2-0 win, thanks to Josh Brownhill. This result broke a club record, marking 31 games unbeaten. The win not only sent Burnley up but also helped Leeds, who had earlier crushed Stoke City 6-0. When Sheffield United lost to Burnley later, it confirmed Leeds’ promotion too.
Leeds, under Daniel Farke, bounced back after last year’s play-off pain against Southampton. Even with losing big players like Archie Gray to Tottenham, Summerville to West Ham, and Rutter to Brighton, Leeds rebuilt wisely. New signings like Joe Rodon, Jayden Bogle, and Tanaka, plus loans like Manor Solomon and Joe Rothwell, brought experience and flair.
Leeds started slow, with only one home loss to Burnley in September, their sole defeat at Elland Road all season, and then rose up the table. A three-month unbeaten run through winter saw them crush Cardiff 7-0 and win tough games against Sunderland and Sheffield. Even March’s shaky form didn’t stop them. As Sheffield faltered, Leeds jumped back to the top.
Sheffield was first in March but ended poorly, with four losses out of five games. Tom Cannon, fresh from Leicester, scored his first goal but Chris Wilder’s team fell to third. Now, they must face the hard Championship play-offs to retain their Premier League hopes.
Leeds’ rise to the Premier League came with two matches to spare. They might still win the Championship if they succeed in their final games against Bristol City and Plymouth, unless Burnley makes up the goal difference.
From last season’s Wembley letdown to this year’s top-tier joy, Leeds and Burnley return to the big league. For Sheffield United, the tough path through play-offs waits.
