Eleven people have been confirmed dead after a bus carrying students, teachers, and parents plunged off a cliffside road in Peru, authorities reported on Sunday.
According to Peru’s Andina news agency, the bus, which had 57 passengers aboard, collided head-on with a van before veering off the road on Saturday.
Jorge Sanchez, director of the regional directorate of San Martin, told AFP, “There are 11 fatalities from the accident, including five 17-year-old students and a two-year-old child.”
Authorities also reported that 18 people were injured in the crash.
The bus was transporting schoolchildren, their families, and teachers from Piura, a town in northern Peru, to the Amazon region of San Martin.
The crash occurred while traveling along a road in the Moyobamba province of the San Martin region.
Local media indicated that the accident took place during a class trip for the high school students.
Peru faces a high occurrence of bus accidents, with 3,138 traffic-related deaths recorded in 2023, according to the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
