Busia traders laud construction of Bumala Modern Market

Western Kenya region is set to reap big from the Bumala Modern Market launch by President William Ruto set in his tour of the region.

President Ruto is set to launch Bumala modern market located at the busy Kisumu-Busia highway on Friday 24 January, 2025.

It is one of the over 400 markets the Kenya Kwanza Government is constructing across the Country.

The move is in line with its commitment to provide hustlers with a decent, safe and environment to sell their produce.

With President Ruto’s packed itinerary in Western Kenya, the launch of Bumala Modern Market is marked as a cornerstone achievement in the region.

Employment opportunities at Bumala Modern Market

Bumala Modern market has provided employment opportunities for the local youths with the number expected to rise to 200 jobs. 

Once complete, it will comprise an ablution block, an ICT hub, a cold room, a food court, a place for young mothers among other social amenities.

It will be home to over 500 traders on market day drawn from the neighbouring Counties of Vihiga and Bungoma. 

These amenities will come at a time where the region has shown robust growth in trade which will bring much needed support to its business community.

Western Kenya Resident Applaud 

Various traders have expressed their relief and excitement to have such a facility constructed in the region.

Margaret Atieno, a trader in Bumala said the market will dignify their trade and foster business in the area.

However, Atieno called on the Government to ensure that local traders operating at the open air market get preference during the allocation of working booths.

Electina Akello shared her expectation of expanding her hotel setup within the premises once the market is ready.

Akello shared that she was allowed to sell to the staff working at the construction saying that such projects empower communities.

“I have been selling food at this site for the last month. When the developer set up to start the construction of this market, I approached him and requested that I be allowed to provide food to the workers.” Akello said.

“Such opportunities spur growth and empowers local communities urging politicians to support the Government in its development agenda.” Akello stated
