In Summary

  • Yesterday, EPRA announced a massive increase in petrol, diesel and kerosene pump prices.
  • In 2019, a marketing stunt in Russia saw men line up in bikinis to get free fuel.

In November 2019, a Russian petrol station came up with a weird marketing strategy.

Olvi Gas Station in Samara, south western part of the country, promised free fuel to anybody who turned up in a bikini.

Expecting a bevy of damsels clad in sexy two-pieces, the petrol station was surprised to see men turn up in briefs and funny supports for their man-boobs. The offer lasted for only three hours. But by then, it had trended globally under the hashtag #BikiniDress.

Following yesterday's unexpected increase in fuel prices, an internet wag jests perhaps its time to try the Samara experiment in Kenya.

EPRA Reviews Fuel Prices

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced an increase of petrol, diesel and kerosene prices by KSh7.58 per litre, KSh7.94 and KSh12.97, respectively.

A litre of petrol in Nairobi is now costing KSh134.72- from KSh127.14. A litre of diesel is KSh115.60 (from KSh107.66), while kerosene is now KSh110.82 - from KSh97.85.

EPRA attributed the high fuel prices to increase in landed costs of petroleum products. The landed cost of petrol has shot up by 0.72 per cent, diesel by 4.81 per cent and kerosene by 0.96 per cent.
