The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has thrown its support behind Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman following harsh criticism from Atalanta head coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

Lookman, who scored in Atalanta’s UEFA Champions League defeat to Club Brugge, was singled out for blame by Gasperini. The manager sparked outrage when he claimed that Lookman is “the worst penalty-taker I have ever seen.”

Lookman’s Response to Gasperini’s Criticism

The 27-year-old winger took to social media to express his disappointment, calling the manager’s comments hurtful and disrespectful.

“I am sad to release this statement, especially considering the success and unity I have shared with the team. I was unfairly singled out for the loss, and the remarks were both hurtful and disrespectful.”

He added that he has faced many challenges at Atalanta but has chosen to remain silent for the sake of team unity.

CAF’s Show of Support for Lookman

In response, CAF took to its official X handle (formerly Twitter) to back the Nigerian star, posting a highlight reel of his performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
