The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has announced a significant boost in the prize money for the CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Key Updates on Prize Money
- The winner of CHAN 2024 will now receive a record-breaking USD 3.5 million
(Ksh 453M), marking a 75% increase from previous editions. - The total prize pool has been raised to USD 10.4 million, reflecting a 32% increase to further elevate the competition’s profile.
CAF President’s Remarks
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed his excitement about the upcoming tournament:
“The CHAN is a vital competition for developing Africa-based football players and young talent. This increase in prize money is part of our broader strategy to invest in African football and enhance its appeal to fans, broadcasters, sponsors, and stakeholders worldwide.”
Dr. Motsepe emphasized that the tournament plays a crucial role in strengthening the global competitiveness of African football and CAF competitions.
CHAN 2024 Schedule and Teams
The tournament is set to kick off on Saturday, February 1, 2025, with the final scheduled for Friday, February 28, 2025.
Qualified Teams So Far
A total of 17 nations have secured their spots in CHAN 2024:
- Hosts: Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda
- Other Qualified Teams: Morocco, Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo, Sudan, Zambia, Angola, and Madagascar
An additional two teams will qualify after completing the remaining matches.
