CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe pays tribute to Pope Francis

Dr. Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), has joined the global community in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, who died on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.

In a statement, Dr. Motsepe described Pope Francis as “an exceptional and outstanding symbol of peace, humility and compassion,” highlighting his lifelong dedication to serving the Catholic Church, uplifting the poor and marginalized, and inspiring millions worldwide.

On behalf of CAF’s 54 member associations, Dr. Motsepe extended condolences to Catholics in Africa, Argentina, and across the globe, as well as to all those touched by Pope Francis’s leadership.

The CAF President also noted the late pontiff’s well-known passion for football and his recognition of the sport’s unique power to unite people from diverse backgrounds.

Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis frequently spoke about the positive role of sports in fostering community, inclusion, and goodwill, and he maintained close ties with football clubs and players in his native Argentina and beyond.

Pope Francis, the first Latin American and first pope from the Global South, was widely regarded as a champion of the poor and a strong advocate for peace, justice, and interfaith dialogue.

His passing has prompted tributes from leaders around the world, including many African heads of state who have praised his compassion, humility, and commitment to social justice.

CAF’s tribute reflects the deep respect Pope Francis commanded within the African football community and beyond. As the world remembers his legacy, CAF emphasized that his example of humanity and unity will continue to inspire generations to come.
