CAF President Patrice Motsepe congratulates Kirsty Coventry on historic IOC Presidency

The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, has extended his congratulations to Kirsty Coventry following her historic election as the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Coventry, who currently serves as Zimbabwe’s Minister of Youth, Art, Sport, and Recreation, made history as the first African and first woman to hold the prestigious position. She was elected as the 10th IOC President during the 144th IOC Session in Costa Navarino, Greece, securing victory in the first round of voting.

Coventry Triumphs Over Strong Competition

Her election saw her surpass a highly competitive field of candidates, including World Athletics boss Lord Sebastian Coe, HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein,David Lappartient, Johan Eliasch, Juan Antonio Samaranch and Morinari Watanabe.

CAF President Hails Coventry’s Victory

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe praised Coventry’s achievement, highlighting its significance for African sports leadership.

“On behalf of the CAF Member Associations representing 54 African nations, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Ms. Kirsty Coventry on her election as IOC President. Her victory fills us with enormous pride and stands as a recognition of her outstanding achievements and embodiment of the philosophy of Olympism. We wish her the very best in her new role.”

Coventry’s Reaction: A Milestone for Women and African Leadership

Following her election, Coventry expressed her deep gratitude and enthusiasm for the opportunity to lead the Olympic Movement.

“I am incredibly honored and excited to be elected as President of the International Olympic Committee! The young girl who first started swimming in Zimbabwe could never have dreamt of this moment. I hope this vote serves as an inspiration to many. Glass ceilings have been shattered today, and I am aware of my responsibility as a role model.”

She further emphasized the unifying power of sports and pledged to promote innovation, inclusivity, and the Olympic values of friendship, excellence, and respect.

A New Era for Global Sports Leadership

Coventry is set to take office on June 23, 2025, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the IOC. Her leadership is expected to drive transformation in global sports governance, fostering greater inclusivity and African representation in the Olympic Movement.
