Callum Hudson-Odoi: Chelsea turned down £70m but now they’ve sold him for £3.5m

SportsWORLD

Callum Hudson-Odoi has been associated with Chelsea since 2007. The English footballer, hailing from Wandsworth, is versatile, capable of playing as an attacking midfielder, left winger, or right wing-back, having joined the club at the tender age of seven.

Born to Ghanaian parents, Hudson-Odoi gradually ascended the ranks within Chelsea’s academy, earning promotions from one juniour team to another.

In 2018, then-Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri made the pivotal decision to include him in the first team.

In January 2019, despite having limited playing time, Bayern Munich, the German champions, made a substantial offer of up to £35 million for the winger.

Hudson-Odoi was tempted, but Chelsea stood firm, despite his transfer request.

When Bayern returned in the summer with a reduced £22.5 million bid, Chelsea again refused and convinced Hudson-Odoi to sign a five-year contract, granting him stability in his career.

During this period, he received a surprise call-up from Gareth Southgate due to England’s injury woes, earning caps.

However, limited club playing time kept him out of favour. In 2020, Bayern showed interest once more, proposing a loan deal with a £70 million buy option, but this offer was declined.

Now, Chelsea have allowed him to depart for a meagre £3.5 million, a decision that, in hindsight, appears as a significant transfer market mistake.

According to respected Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano, Hudson-Odoi’s move to Nottingham Forest includes potential add-ons and a substantial sell-on clause.

“Nottingham Forest have signed Callum Hudson-Odoi on £3.5m deal — plus add-ons and significant sell-on clause for Chelsea,” Fabrizio said.

On his debut for Forest on Monday, September 18, 2023, the 22-year-old scored his first goal in a 1-1 draw against Burnley, potentially marking an instant return on investment.
