The appointment of Belgian Marc Brys as the new coach for Cameroon’s men’s national team has apparently come as a surprise to the Cameroon Football Federation.
Cameroon’s Ministry of Sports has hired Marc Brys to take over from Rigobert Song, whose contract elapsed and was not renewed following the national team’s performance during the 2023 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
“The Cameroonian football federation learned, at the same time as all Cameroonians, of the appointment to positions of responsibility within the national men’s senior football team,” read a statement on Facebook.
According to the Federation, this move contravenes the presidential decree relating to the organization of Cameroon’s national football teams.
FIFA does not permit government interference in the administration of sports on a national level.
Brys is the third Belgian to take charge of Cameroon. The last was Hugo Broos, who led the country to its fifth AFCON title in 2017.
