Cape Media Group Editorial Director Macharia Wamugo graduates with a Master’s Degree

“This Master’s Degree is for my parents and wife,” Cape Media’s Group Editorial Director Macharia Wamugo divulged to this writer in an interview.

Macharia is graduating with a Master’s in Media Leadership and Innovation from Aga Khan University (AKU). He resolved to pursue this degree in 2021 amidst the Covid 19 pandemic and the uncertainty it brought with it.

“I was in mid level leadership at the time and I saw the need to up-skill to be able to lead the transformation from analogue to digital in the media space,” said Macharia.

Macharia pursued his undergraduate degree in Mass Communication (Public Relations) from Nazarene University. He graduated at the height of Covid robbing his parents off the experience to witness due to the restrictions.

“My father was unable to pursue an education yet he really yearned for it. At some point he re-located to Nanyuki to work as a casual labourer so as to save up for his studies. His father (my grandfather) did not subscribe to westernisation hence did not believe in education.”

Mr Macharia’s journalism career spans over 20 years. He started off in a local radio station as an intern and climbed up the ranks working across most media houses locally and internationally.

Since Macharia joined Cape Media on 1st May 2023 a notable transformation of the newsroom is undisputed. He led the TV47 re-launch on 19th July 2023.

Under his leadership, TV47 has aired “big” interviews like two interviews with President William Ruto, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Former Namibia’s First Lady Monica Geingos while she was still in office, International Criminal Court Prosecutor Karim Khan, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwah among others.
