Kenya Sevens registered 19-12 victory over Australia to start their Cape Town Sevens campaign on a high on Saturday 7th December, 2024 in South Africa.
Australia were first to score through James Turner with Hayden Sargeant’s conversion sailing through for 00-07 lead.
Hayden Sargeant proved dangerous to Kenyan defence as he came in with the second try for Australia minutes later but missed on the conversion bringing the scores to 00-12.
Kevin Wekesa managed the first try for Shujaa with Nygel Amaitsa making no mistakes in adding the extras making matters 07-12 at the break.
The second half saw Shujaa landing a penalty try extending their scores to 14-12. In the dying minutes of second half George Ooro scored the last try for Kenya with the conversion being unsuccessful but this could not stop Shujaa from picking a 19-12 win.
Shujaa who are now top of Pool B standings will be looking to book a place in the main cup semis as they take on Spain at 3:16 pm (EAT) in their second and last match of the pool stages.
A win against Spain will see Shujaa head into the semis as the World rugby announced a change to the HSBC SVNS 2025 format used in Dubai and last season where now the four pool winners will progress to the Cup semi-finals. The second placed teams will enter the 5th-8th place playoffs and the third placed teams go into the 9th-12th place playoffs.
The new format is a departure from the previous one, where the top two teams qualified for the quarterfinals.
