Kenya Premier League giants Gor Mahia began their campaign in the CECAFA Kagame Cup on a low note, registering a 1-0 loss against Zambia’s Red Arrows in the opening Group B fixture.
James Chamanga 74th minute strike decided the match, securing the three crucial points for the Zambian giants in a game they dominated for the better part.
Reflecting on the match, Gor Mahia’s Brazilian tactician Leonardo Martins Neiva acknowledged the team’s inefficiencies and difficulties during the match but emphasized that there is no cause for alarm as the boys will be able to redeem themselves in the remaining matches.
“It was a tough game for us, for both teams, to be honest. The opponents controlled the game in the first half, especially in the first 25 minutes. But after that, we fixed some issues and found some balance. The first half ended 0-0, but they played better than us.”
He also called on the fans to be patient as he continues to interact with and understand the individual players’ performance capabilities.
“The players do not know me, and we need time to fix issues like technical, physical, and tactical aspects,” he explained. “I am happy with their behavior, character, and attitude. They fight; they are fighters. On that point, I am very satisfied.”
Neiva also promised that things will get better when the new signings settle in, while emphasizing the need to collect maximum points when they take on Telkom on Sunday.
Gor Mahia are currently at the bottom of Group B with zero points. Coach Neiva seeks to guide his team to their first victory under his leadership.
