Chelsea captain Reece James charged by FA for insulting referee

Reece James has been charged by the Football Association (FA) for an alleged incident in the tunnel following Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa on Sunday.

In a statement released by the FA via Twitter account, the Chelsea captain is said to have used improper language towards a match official.

“It’s alleged that the defender (Reece James) used improper and/or insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour towards a match official in the tunnel after the game,” FA statement reads.

The 23-year-old Reece James has now been given a three-day ultimatum to respond to the charge of breaching FA rule E3.

On Sunday, Chelsea’s French right-back Malo Gusto was sent off in the 58th minute for dangerous play after the video assistant referee (VAR) encouraged referee Gillett to check the pitch side monitor.

Reece James. who was appointed new Chelsea captain by Mauricio Pochettino. has struggled with injuries during the past two years and has not played since their 1-1 draw with Liverpool on the opening day of the season.

The England international is expected to be on the sidelines until at least late October.
