Chidimma Adetshina: Model with Nigerian ties withdraws from Miss South Africa amid nationality controversy

South African model Chidimma Adetshina has officially withdrawn from the Miss South Africa 2024 competition, citing safety concerns for herself and her family.

The 23-year-old made the announcement on Instagram, expressing her disappointment over the circumstances that led to her decision.

“After much careful consideration, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw myself from the competition for the safety and wellbeing of my family and I,” she wrote on Thursday, August 8.

The controversy surrounding Adetshina’s participation intensified following accusations from South African Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber. He claimed that her mother, who has Mozambican roots, may have committed identity theft.

Schreiber stated that an investigation initiated at the request of the pageant’s organizers found evidence of potential fraud and identity theft. These allegations have sparked a national debate about identity and citizenship in South Africa.

“Reasons exist to believe that fraud and identity theft may have been committed by the person recorded in home affairs records as Chidimma’s mother,” the minister said.

Adetshina was born in South Africa in 2001, and according to South African law, anyone born in the country after 1995 is granted citizenship. However, her mixed heritage, which includes Nigerian lineage, has fueled controversy and xenophobic sentiments among some segments of the public.

Despite the challenges, Adetshina described her journey in the Miss South Africa competition as an “amazing” experience. Many supporters have rallied behind her, condemning the attacks and calling for a more inclusive understanding of what it means to be South African.

In her parting message, she expressed gratitude for the journey, stating, “Being part of the Miss South Africa 2024 competition has been an amazing journey,” despite the challenges she faced.

In response to her withdrawal, the Miss South Africa Organisation released a statement wishing Adetshina success in her future endeavors. They emphasized their commitment to celebrating South Africa’s rich and inclusive culture, stating, “Miss South Africa celebrates South Africa’s rich and inclusive culture and diversity.”
