Chief of Defence Forces Gen Kahariri visits Mai Mahiu flood victims

The new Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Charles Kahariri on Saturday, May 4, 2024 visited the Mai Mahiu flood victims.

General Kahariri’s visit to Mai Majiu was his first assignment since he was appointed as CDF by President William Ruto on May 2.

According to a statement from the Kenya Defence Forces, General Kahariri was in Mai Mahiu to assess the state of rescue operation in the area that was being led by KDF soldiers.

He was also checking on the recovery process following a flooding menace that led to loss of lives, displacement of people, and destruction of infrastructure and property.

Upon arrival, he was received by Maj Gen John Nkomo, who briefed him on the recovery process.

At the same time, General Kahariri met with Nakuru governor Susan Kihika and other leaders who were at the site.

So far, the multi-agency team has recovered 58 bodies of floods victims in Mai Mahiu.

Speaking to floods victims, Gen Kahariri said KDF is also responsible for informing the public on areas that are likely to be affected by floods as they urge them to move to safer grounds.

“KDF has deployed varied capabilities and is working with the multi-agency teams to support the affected families, including those who have lost their loved ones.

“When we come together, we get to serve the nation better. Most importantly, is to closely monitor the situation to determine who is in greater danger and sensitize the people in prone areas to move to safer grounds,” Gen Kahariri said.

General Charles Kahariri visited floods victims being hosted at Ngeya Girls Secondary School before he went to Georges and Magathi Bridges.

Meanwhile, Nakuru Governor appreciated KDF for the support, adding that they have played a key role in search and recovery efforts.

His visit to Mai Mahiu comes a few days after President William Ruto visited the area on April 30, 2024.

President Ruto disclosed that the government will build houses, cover medical and burial expenses of the Mai Mahiu floods victims.

Several people were killed and others were displaced on Monday April 29, 2024 after Kijabe dam burst and caused floods in Kamuchiri Village, Mai Mahiu,  Nakuru County, due to the ongoing heavy rains in the country.
