Police in Nyamira County are investigating a shocking incident in which a Chuka University student died after a brutal caning by his uncles in Nyankono village, North Mugirango.
22-year-old Brian Mogaka was reportedly suspended from the varsity due to alleged involvement in cannabis use. His mother, Teresa Mogaka, allegedly sought help from her brothers to discipline him. What followed was a tragic case of extreme punishment.
Confirming the incident, Ikonge Assistant Chief Joseph Masese said that the uncles tied the student’s hands and legs before mercilessly beating him with canes. The assault continued non-stop until the young man reportedly succumbed to his injuries.
In an apparent attempt to cover up the crime, the assailants allegedly changed Mogaka’s clothes, laid him on his bed and placed cattle pesticide beside him to mislead authorities. They then fled the scene.
Officers from Ekerenyo Police Station, along with investigators, arrived at the home on Tuesday, March 25 night, only to find the lifeless body.
The body — ridden with multiple bruises and injuries — was taken to Nyamira Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects, who remain at large.
Mogaka’s tragic death has raised concerns over the use of excessive punishment, with police urging the public to report such cases to law enforcement rather than resort to violence.
The investigation is ongoing as police work to bring the perpetrators to justice.
