The recent death of Dr. Keith Makori, a 30-year-old medical professional, has left a profound impact on his family, friends, and the community.
On the evening of July 20, Dr. Makori fell from the eighth floor of an apartment in Kikuyu, in what authorities are currently investigating as a possible suicide.
Just moments before his tragic fall, he had reached out to his girlfriend, sharing distressing thoughts that alarmed her and prompted immediate action.
In the hours leading up to the incident, Dr. Makori was staying with a friend in the Kidfarmaco area of Kikuyu.
At approximately 11 PM, he called his girlfriend, expressing feelings of hopelessness and suicidal ideation. Concerned for his well-being, she quickly contacted the friend hosting him, urging him to return to the apartment.
Tragically, upon his arrival, the friend discovered Dr. Makori lying on the ground, gravely injured, with visible trauma to his head and bleeding from his mouth and nose. Despite the swift arrival of an ambulance, he was pronounced dead at Karen Hospital shortly thereafter.
As investigations unfold, police have indicated that initial findings suggest Dr. Makori may have taken his own life.
Bernard Kirui, the Kikuyu sub-county police commander, told Nation.Africa that while preliminary investigations lean toward suicide, they await the results of a post-mortem examination to provide a definitive conclusion.
Authorities have interviewed several individuals who were in contact with Dr. Makori on that fateful day, but none are currently being treated as suspects in the case.
Dr. Makori was well-regarded in his professional circles, having previously served as the chief finance officer at Kotani Pay, a fintech company, and held various roles in research and strategy within the technology sector. His expertise in blockchain technology and passion for using technology to enhance quality of life were evident in his professional bio.
The incident adds to a concerning trend of rising suicides in Kenya, prompting calls for greater mental health awareness and support.
