The conclave to elect a new Pope will begin on May 7, 2025, the Holy See Press Office has announced.
The Cardinals present in Rome made the decision on Monday, April 28 at their fifth General Congregation.
The conclave will take place in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel, which will remain closed to visitors during those days.
The conclave comes after Pope Francis died on Easter Monday (April, 21) and was buried on Saturday, April 26 in a simple tomb at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major. He was the first Pope in over 120 years to be buried outside the precincts of St. Peter’s Basilica (what is now Vatican City).
