Police have arrested the Controller of Budget Dr Margaret Nyakango in connection to a case she was facing in 2016.
The Controller of Budget was arrested on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 in Mombasa.
In the year 2016, before she was appointed as Controller of Budget, she was facing some court case with 10 other people.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had indicated in a notice that Margaret Nyakango and 10 others were facing four charges, including conspiracy to defraud and operating a Sacco without a valid licence.

Meanwhile, the office of the DPP has indicated that there was enough evidence to charge the Controller of Budget and the other co-accused persons.
However on December 6, 2019, Busia Senator Okiyah Omutatah moved to the Labour Court to challenge the appointment of Margaret NYakang’o as the Controller of Budget.
“Nyakang’o does not meet the constitutional requisite qualifications for appointment to the office of Controller of Budget,” Omutatah noted in court papers.

According to Omutatah at that time, Nyakang’o did not have enough experience and extensive knowledge in public finance.
The activist had insisted that the process used in recruitment of Nyakang’o was unconstitutional, and urged the court to declare her appointment as null and void.
