Cop accused of shooting U.S embassy official in Kiambu detained for 14 days

Police officer identified as Dennis Mwai Irungu, who allegedly shot a U.S Embassy employee in a bar, will be held in the Kiambu police station for a period of 14 days.

Before Senior Principal Magistrate Wanjiru Nganga at Kiambu law courts, investigating officer Reuben Mwaniki of the DCI homicide filed an application for an extension of time to detain the suspect in order to complete his investigation.

“The homicide investigations at DCI headquarters is investigating the case of murder where one Anthony Njomo Kiono aged 35 years old, an employee of the US embassy in Nairobi was shot dead outside the premises in Kiambu town on the morning of May 26, 2024,” Mwaniki told the court.

The suspect allegedly withheld reporting the incident from the court until after his apprehension.

The investigating officer informed the court in a supporting affidavit that the deceased was having a good time at the bar when he was shot.

The court was also informed that one spent cartilage was found at the spot and that the Crime spot Investigation docket in Kiambu had taken pictures of the area.

The suspect, a police officer, was allegedly captured on the lounge’s CCTV footage battling with revelers which the court was also informed about.

The county police commander called the suspect on May 28, 2024, in Kiambu town, and he was taken into custody.

The investigating officer informed the court that the reason they sought to keep the suspect was because the discovered firearm had some missing pieces that could have provided important leads for their investigation. They also believed that the missing parts were from the murder weapon.

To ascertain whether the subject is competent to face trial, a mental evaluation is still pending before he is led away. The investigating team will record statements and take fingerprints.

Three more suspects remain at large and are being pursued by the investigating team.

The two suspects who are in lawful custody together with the suspect will be charged by the investigative team.

The Kiambu Law Court gave DCI investigating officer Peter Kingawi ten days to wrap up his probe into the death of the U.S embassy employee.

He is also required to gather enough evidence to charge Nason Kiteme Kangalia, another suspect in the murder.

The court heard that after a disagreement broke out among Kiteme’s friends who were inside the club supporting one of the musicians invited for a performance.

“Each group had bouncers who were protecting them and one of the groups had bouncers suspected to be armed with firearms,” the jury was told.
