Jackson Kuria Kihara commonly known as Cop Shakur, a prison officer who was suspended for joining Kenyans in the anti-Finance Bill protests in June 2024 has been charged in court.
Appearing before magistrate Gilbert Shikwe on Monday January 20, 2025, Shakur was charged with publishing false information in violation of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act.
The court was told that the controversial prison officer allegedly posted a statement on his X account (formerly Twitter) that could incite the public.
He denied the charge and was released on a cash bail of Ksh.50,000.
Shakur is alleged to have committed the offence on January 11, 2025.
He was arrested on January 15, and arraigned in court a day later, where DCI sought to detain him for 21 days.
The former prison warder is a fierce critic of the Kenya Kwanza government, who shot to fame during Gen Z protests.
The case is scheduled for mention on February 17, 2025.
