Kenya’s Emerging Stars have a huge task ahead when they take on Zimbabwe in the final Group B clash at Wolfson Stadium in KwaZakhele. This is a must-win for Kenya to keep their hopes alive for a semi-final spot in the COSAFA Cup. Kenya are third in the group, while Zimbabwe are the group leaders.
The Emerging Stars won their opening match against Zambia 2-0 but lost to Comoros by the same margin. Zimbabwe, on the other hand, secured victories in their two group games against Comoros, 1-0 and 2-0, and lead the group with six points.
Kenya aim to recover from Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Comoros Island, a defeat significantly impacted by a first-half red card shown to defender Paul Ochuoga, who also conceded a penalty in the process. Despite the setback, Kenya was fortunate not to concede more goals during the match.
The match began with the Emerging Stars showing promise and creating several goal-scoring opportunities. However, Comoros took the lead against the run of play with a penalty in the 34th minute. Comoros held their one-goal advantage as the first half ended. Early in the second half, they capitalized on their numerical superiority and scored their second and final goal of the match.
In a bid to change the game’s momentum, attacking players Stanley Wilson, Alfred Tanui, and Aldrine Kibet were introduced, signaling a clear intent to secure a positive result. The Emerging Stars continued to push for a goal and came close when Chris Erambo’s attempt hit the post. Despite their valiant efforts, the team could not mount a successful comeback.
Both Kenya and second-placed Comoros have three points. The Comoros will face already-eliminated Zambia in the other Group C match at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. The three group winners and the best overall runner-up will progress to the semifinals, meaning Kenya must win by at least three goals to top the group.
