In Summary

  • National Reconstruction Alliance's Abdulghani Sheik Hassan says Garissa Township "has been ruled by one family for a long time."
  • Defence CS Aden Duale has thrown his weight behind Mohamed Barrow Dekow, his brother-in-law.

The race for the Garissa Township parliamentary seat has picked up pace ahead of the January 5, 2023 by-election.

The seat fell vacant following the appointment of incumbent Aden Duale to the position of Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Defence, and his subsequent resignation.

Duale has thrown his weight behind Mohamed Barrow Dekow, his brother-in-law. He will be flying the United Democratic Alliance party flag.

Barrow's candidature has also been supported by the influential Abduwak clan. A meeting held in a Garissa hotel last weekend saw clan members urge the community to vote for him.

The National Reconstruction Alliance has fronted Abdulghani Sheik Hassan as its candidate. It alleges that Garissa Township "has been ruled by one family for a long time", and is hopeful that fresh blood "will accelerate economic growth."

The youthful candidate was handed the party's certificate after a meeting with members of Garissa youth caucus yesterday.

Barrow's candidature has received opposition from other candidates, notably Abdikarim Osman, former Fafi Member of Parliament.

“The endorsement means nothing to me and that is the dynasty theory that we have been dealing with politically. It will end by the people of Garissa electing me as their area Member of Parliament,” Osman is quoted as saying.
