Court finds acting Police IG Gilbert Masengeli guilty of contempt of court

The High Court on Monday September 9, 2024 found  acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli guilty of contempt of court.

This was after Masengeli failed to obey court summons for the 7th time.

Masengeli was expected to appear in court for questioning over the abduction of three people in Kitengela, Kajiado County about two weeks ago on August 19.

“It is my finding that the Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli is guilty of contempt of court,”  High Court Judge Lawrence Mugambi declared.

Justice Mugambi added that the sentencing for Masengeli is scheduled on Friday.

The court has also summoned Commandant SGB and VIP unit Lazarus Opicho to explain why he called Judge Mugumbi’s bodyguard and driver to establish his whereabouts before today’s hearing.

“Lazarus Opicho be and is hereby summoned for calling my driver and bodyguard trying to ascertain my whereabouts, we need to ascertain the reason for such inquiry,” Justice Mugambi ordered.

On Monday morning, Masengeli sent Deputy Police IG Eliud Lagat to represent him in court, saying he was in Wajir over security matters.

However, Justice Mugambi in his ruling said the acting IG has held the court at ransom, making it hard for the court to serve justice to the victims’ family.
