CS Alfred Mutua visits police officer who lost his hands while throwing teargas canister during protests in Nairobi

Tourism Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua paid a visit to a police officer who lost both of his arms in Nairobi’s CBD during Tuesday’s protests against the Finance Bill, 2024.

Mutua visited Nairobi West Hospital, where Chief Inspector David Karuri Maina had been admitted.

“My visit highlights the profound impact of the recent unrest on both the individuals involved and the broader community, underscoring the need for tolerance, unity and resilience in challenging times,” Mutua explained on X.

While respecting Kenyans’ right to demonstrate, the Cabinet Secretary cautioned against demonstrations fueled solely by activism and propaganda.

Maina and another cop were severely hurt when a teargas canister exploded on them in Nairobi.

This occurred following Maina’s failure to unleash an exploded canister during the protests, which cost him two hands.

A second female cop suffered major chest injuries when the teargas canister detonated on them.

Maina was one of the officers tasked with containing the demonstrators when he detonated a teargas canister outside Kencom, beside the International Life House.

Moreover, on Wednesday June 19, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, paid a visit to the two police officers in hospital.

In these events, several police officers and protestors were injured during the protests while some were struck by flying canisters thrown by anti-riot officers.

Meanwhile, several businesses were shut down in the city center as police engaged several factions in running confrontations.

The demonstrators had been mobilized online, and their campaign had already become cohesive and structured.

“His blood that shed is on you who were demonstrating and causing violence. You have a right to demonstrate, but the violence is not allowed. Governor Ntutu and I will contribute Ksh1M in order to cushion him,” Mutua said yesterday.
