CS Duale slams DP Gachagua amid Impeachment allegations

Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has openly criticized Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in response to Gachagua’s defence against the impeachment allegations he currently faces in the National Assembly.

Duale took to X (formerly Twitter) to dismiss the Deputy President’s remarks, accusing Gachagua of attempting to gain public sympathy. Duale referred to Gachagua’s press briefing as a tactic designed to sway public opinion in his favour.

The Environment CS accused Gachagua of “playing to the gallery” and downplayed the Deputy President’s claims of being elected by the people. Duale argued that Gachagua was not elected directly by 7.2 million Kenyans, but was instead nominated by President William Ruto as his running mate.

“Despite tonight’s performance, the truth will prevail. It’s disheartening to see someone who became Deputy President not through a direct election but via nomination by the President, boasting about being elected by millions,” Duale remarked.

Duale’s response came after Gachagua claimed there had been inadequate public participation in the impeachment process. The Environment CS refuted this, stating that no court orders were issued to halt the proceedings and that ample time had been given for Kenyans to share their views.

According to Duale, the impeachment process is already in motion, and Gachagua’s statements won’t interfere with its progress. “Threats and defensive interviews cannot stop a constitutional process already underway,” Duale asserted.

He further emphasized that under the National Assembly Standing Order 51, a Special Motion for Removal cannot be withdrawn without the approval of the House, making the process immune to external influence.

Duale’s remarks followed a press briefing where DP Gachagua denied all 11 allegations brought against him, labeling them as “outrageous propaganda” and politically motivated, with no constitutional basis. Gachagua also dismissed rumours of his potential resignation, vowing to defend himself and expressing confidence in his ability to clear his name.

“I am confident that I will get justice, and this impeachment will be thrown out,” Gachagua declared.

The Deputy President is set to appear before the National Assembly on Tuesday afternoon to defend himself, backed by a legal team of 20 top lawyers.
