Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs cabinet secretary nominee Hassan Joho has revealed that his net worth stands at Ksh2.3 billion.
Joho attributed his wealth to investments in developed properties, shareholding, jewelry, and cash in the bank.
The former Mombasa governor emphasized that this wealth represents his personal assets, not those of his family.
He made the remarks on Sunday August 4, 2024 when he appeared before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments for vetting.
Joho business dealings
He emphasized that his family does not engage in business with any government entities.
Speaking before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments, Joho stated that his family is involved in logistics in countries like Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, and Kenya, but none of their business dealings are with the government.
Joho reassured the committee that his family maintains clean business practices and has diversified into real estate.
In addition, he clarified that they are not involved in the jewelry business.
Addressing allegations of drug trafficking, he responded to a query from Teso South MP Mary Emase by stating that despite numerous claims, no evidence has ever been produced to support these accusations.
He noted that the late Internal Security Minister George Saitoti had once presented a report to parliament clearing him of such allegations.
Hassan Joho, recounting his political journey, emphasized the intense scrutiny he faced, especially during his term as governor in 2013.
He defends business integrity amid past government conflicts
“I am not naïve. I come from a fortunate family with successful businesses, and I am grateful for what I have,” he stated.
He highlighted the challenges he encountered as a vocal critic of the Jubilee government, experiencing various personal and professional attacks.
“I faced personal conflicts and they targeted my businesses on multiple fronts. If I had been involved in any illegal activities, I wouldn’t have survived that regime—they would have used it against me immediately,” he asserted.
The nominee reaffirmed his dedication to lawful business practices.
“I assure Kenyans that I run clean, transparent businesses that can be audited. If someone wants to discuss the dossier that was presented, they should also consider the outcome of the investigations,” he said.
His statements come as he prepares to take on a new role in the government, leveraging his extensive experience and leadership in the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, following his nomination by President William Ruto.
