Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Interior & National Administration Prof Kithure Kindiki has expressed confidence that Kenya will be successful in the Haiti mission.
Kindiki was speaking today (Thursday) when he appeared before the National Assembly security committee.
“In August 2022 the government of Haiti requested for peace support which was then forwarded to UN Security Council. The security council met two weeks ago and deliberated on the same,” he began.
Kenya’s Mission to Haiti
The Interior CS stated that it was an honor to receive such a request from the security council, although due diligence was underway.
“We have already sent a team to assess the situation in Haiti before the necessary procedures have been undertaken. We are engaged with diplomatic world through UN security council,” he added.
Kindiki Assures Kenyans
Kindiki remained confident that the 1,000 National Police officers who will be sent to Haiti starting January 2024 are cut out for the job.
“I assure the country we are not taking our officers to Haiti as Guinea pig’s. Kenya has been a participant in peace keeping missions and successfully done,” the minister added.
He went on to assure members of the security committee that the government would not inject funds into the mission.
“This mission shall not cause the expenditure by any funds by Kenyan government because it’s funded by UN.”
Raila Questions Mission to Haiti
His sentiments come a week after Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition leader Raila Odinga poked holes into the subject.
According to him, the unrest in Haiti does not require external parties to intervene.
“Why Kenya?” Odinga posed, adding, “The U.S. itself withdrew its forces from there, the problem with Haiti is political, they do not need more guns to calm that situation.”
President William Ruto had the previous day received congratularoty message from the United States President Joe Biden after the United Nations Security Council approved Kenya’s mission to Haiti.
