CS Kuria warns police officers against taking bribes from motorists with expired insurance policies

National NewsNews

Cabinet Secretary for Public Service Performance and Delivery Management Moses Kuria has fired a warning to traffic police officers who are taking bribes from PSV owners who have taken insurance polices with xplico Insurance which was recently put under receivership.

According to CS Kuria, it is unfair to expect Public Service Vehicles owners to have their Policy’s renewed over the weekend.

Kuria has reveled that his office has received complaints from PSV owners decrying harassments by traffic enforcers.

“I have received reports about traffic police officers asking for bribes from PSV owners who have cover from Explico Insurance which was only put under receivership yesterday.” Stated the Cabinet Secretary.

“Its not reasonable to expect innocent policy holders to get new cover over the weekend.” He added.

The Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) put the insurance company xplico Insurance company under receivership and appointed the Policyholders Compensation Fund (PCF) to manage the insurer.

“The insurer is prohibited from issuing any new insurance contracts from 8th December 2023,” IRA said in a statement.

“Its existing Policyholders are advised to immediately seek alternative covers from other licensed insurers to ensure that there is no unnecessary exposure,” it added.

“The Policyholders Compensation Fund will compensate the affected Claimants as provided for under the Insurance Act, CAP 487 Laws of Kenya.”

“The insurer is prohibited from issuing any new insurance policies with effect from 8th December 2023. Its existing Policyholders are advised to immediately seek alternative covers from other licensed insurers to ensure that there is no unnecessary exposure,”

CS Kuria said that he has alerted Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome calling on Motorists not to pay bribes to officers.

“I have raised this issue with IG Japheth Koome. Any police officers especially around Eldoret Town who are doing this, do it at your own risk . I urge all PSV owners not to pay any bribes”
