National NewsNews

Education cabinet secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu and his Interior counterpart Kithure Kindiki had no foreign trips in 2023, according to Tifa research.

In a report released on Thursday February 7, Tourism CS Alfred Mutua had the highest number of foreign trips with 28 percent, followed by Public Service CS Moses Kuria with 16 percent.

“On the contrary, Alfred Mutua (Tourism/Wildlife and previously Foreign Affairs ), had the highest tally of foreign trips within the scope of his duties. Given the international nature of his ministerial portfolios, extensive travel is an inherent expectation.

At the same time, Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen and Gender CS Aisha Jumwa had the least foreign trips at 2 percent each.

According to Tifa, the top travel destination for the cabinet secretaries was Europe at 24% share followed by the rest of Africa (excluding East Africa) at 20%.

“A reliable indicator of the impact of these international travel would be the resulting economic ties and partnerships between Kenya and destination countries,” Tifa noted.

There were a total of 2,741 activities that were analyzed on the Cabinet Secretaries. Out of these, 203 were foreign trips.

Researchers gathered data from reputable sources, to ensure credibility of the report.

The Tifa team had an assumption that communication officers for CSs usually post most of the activities on the Ministry and CS’s social media handles.

In October 2023, President Ruto reshuffled his Cabinet, although none of them was fired.
