“CS Murkomen must apologise for lying to Kenyans” – Senator Cherargei after yet another JKIA blackout

National NewsNews

The wrangles between Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen are not ending any time soon.

Senator Cherargei has slammed the CS over yet another national power blackout that saw Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) plunged into darkness on Sunday, December 10 evening.

Speaking to the press at Parliament Buildings on Monday, Senator Cherargei said that CS Murkomen should apologise for lying to Kenyans.

“CS Murkomen went to JKIA, fired individuals and told the country that generators have been fixed but yesterday it was a disaster. How can you lose electricity and generator at a critical national asset like JKIA. I think the minister must apologise for lying to Kenyans that generators were working yet he knew very well that they were not working,” said the Senator.

‘Constant national embarrassment’

In August 2023, CS Murkomen fired then Kenya Airport Authority Managing Director Alex Gitari after a blackout at JKIA, leading to passengers getting stranded for more than two hours.

A few days later, the country was treated to yet another embarrassing moment after the roofs of the JKIA started leaking.

While blaming the previous regime over the roof leakage, CS Murkomen formed a committee to asses the state of Kenyan airports.

But Senator Cherargei maintains that the CS is not only incompetent, but does not have the knowhow to fix problems in his Ministry.

“The other day he formed a committee to look into leaking roofs at JKIA. I hope he is not going to form another committee to look into failed back-up generators. I think this is incompetency from the minister,” Senator Cherargei added.

‘Take personal responsibility’

The senator says that it is high time CS Murkomen takes responsibility and be accountable for the monumental blunders in his docket.

Cherargei clais that the CS has developed a knack for insulting, belittling and demeaning elected leaders ever since he was appointed in the Executive by President William Ruto.

“The last time he came to Nandi he called me ‘akili kidogo’, so who has ‘akili kidogo’ now? He has failed to fixed a generator at JKIA.”

He added: “I believe that CS Murkoen’s expertise is belittling, demeaning and insulting elected leaders like me, but expertise where he is needed in this one I think he’s clueless of what needs to be done in most of the sectors in his docket.”
