CS Murkomen, PS Omollo tour Climate WorX initiative along Ngong River in Mukuru Kwa Reuben

Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and National Administration Kipchumba Murkomen, and the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, Dr. Raymond Omollo, today toured the Climate WorX initiative along the River Ngong in Mukuru Kwa Reuben.

It has been 75 days since the launch of the Climate WorX initiative, which is steadily gaining momentum, particularly in informal settlements. The 20,000 youth recruited under the program have restored nearly half of the targeted 47 km of the Nairobi River.

The initiative was developed in response to severe flooding along riparian areas, which led to the displacement of residents in Mukuru Kwa Reuben, Mathare, Kibra, and Dandora.

Additionally, 30,000 people displaced from these areas have been enlisted for social housing.

The initiative was designed as a multi-sectoral effort, incorporating contributions from the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), the National Youth Service (NYS), and local communities.

Launched by President William Ruto in September 2024, the Climate WorX initiative is a flagship environmental and employment program aimed at rehabilitating critical ecosystems particularly urban river corridors while creating job opportunities for Kenyan youth.
