In a bid to attain a one million tree seedlings target by the Ministry of Health, Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha was accompanied by her Principal Secretary alongside other county government leaders in West Pokot County.
CS Nakhumicha presided over the National Tree Planting Day at Chepkalit Secondary School where she had targeted to plant over 25,000 tree seedlings. Unfortunately, she only managed to plant 15,000 trees.
According to CS Nakhumicha, more than 10,000 tree seedlings holes were washed away by floods which were caused by heavy rains in the area.
“Our plan was to plant 25,000 trees but we have gotten a challenge because the holes that were dug yesterday were washed away by the heavy rains of last night. But we have managed to plant today is about 15,000 but we have left behind seedlings that the community around will assist the Ministry achieve its target,” CS Nakhumicha said.
Addressing the media, CS Nakhumicha used the opportunity to ask locals to use the advantage and plant more trees in the area in a bid to mitigate climate change.
Nakhumicha also used the opportunity to ask striking health workers including doctors and nurses to return to work as soon as possible, urging doctors unions to sort out their personal issues with the county governments if there is one in order to avoid any standstill situation in hospitals.
